This is an old book, Harriet Braiker unfortunately died at a rather young age, and her work doesn't seem to get much air time. Yes, this book is dated in the sense that she is describing Beck's work in cognitive therapy as a new phenomena - I quickly scanned alot of this kind of explanatory part in the beginning, as it has been well documented in later books about cognitive therapy and CBT. What I did find interesting were the particular traps and dilemmas women may get caught in, that I unfortunately, recognised today. There's probably not anything startling new, and her 21-day program to remedy the situation, is based on tools and techniques that are still used today, and therefore quite prescient of her as there is now a firmer evidence base. I found this useful in finding thought patterns that I may not have been conscious of, as I experience them as a given. Dated, but well written and an interesting read. This is me to a tee. This book really helped me understand why I have unrealistic expectations of myself, and how I allow others to carry unrealistic expectations for me to try to meet. And, most importantly, the joys of learning to live within the boundaries of reality and to recognize my needs for rest and rejuvenation.
So critical for the long haul of living well. There were some references to the 80s as if the 80s are the latest thing, but ignoring those, the principles are VERY good! This is me to a tee. This book really helped me understand why I have unrealistic expectations of myself, and how I allow others to carry unrealistic expectations for me to try to meet. And, most importantly, the joys of learning to live within the boundaries of reality and to recognize my needs for rest and rejuvenation.
