A custom map allows the player to play out battles in a new setting designed either by Westwood Studios, the company behind the games, or by other players using open-source map editing software. These custom maps and modifications are easily installed. They just have to be inserted into the root directory to which 'Red Alert' was originally installed.

If the file contained is an executable file, with the extension.exe, you can double click on it to automatically install it. Map files have the file extensions.mpr or.mmx for 'Red Alert 2', and.yrm for 'Yuri's Revenge'. Select the file you want to use. Find the root directory where you installed Red Alert 2 on your computer.

It will usually be in the C drive, under 'Program Files', then 'Westwood'. Move the map file into the 'Red Alert 2' root folder. Load up 'Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge' and you will be able to use the new map.
